Cochrane Park Track
Open/trophy meetings were held here in the 1960s although the track has been in existence for some time and was built by Newcastle University. It was available for informal public use and as an open park area (a field is adjacent to the track) until a few years ago. There was a pavilion with an open area in front with steps down to the first bend of the track but this has been demolished. The track has recently been fenced off by the University Authorities and is now unaccessible. It is fairly overgrown but is growing in from the outside. There are some weeds and moss all over the track but the cinder surface is still clearly visible. The throws circles are visible but the jumping pits have been grassed over although you can still see the hollows where the runways and pits were. The javelin runway is overgrown but easy to make out. The track is in a very desirable area for residential development and may not be in existence for much longer. It is in the locality of Heaton.
