Gateshead was announced as a location for the indoor athletics centre for the North East region of the English Institute of Sport in March 1999. It will be situated in the "bowl" area to the east of the Gateshead International Stadium and the work started in 2001 and is due to be completed in winter 2002. It will include an indoor straight with field facilities and a floodlit, dedicated outdoor throws areas.
