Melbourne Park Athletics Centre
The track was originally 6 lane cinder and opened in 1962. It was called Melbourne Stadium and the 1963 English Schools Champs were staged here. The track was upgraded to synthetic at a cost of ?1.5 million and reopened in April 1999. The track surface is Spiketop TC. The runways are coloured green. Before the track was upgraded there used to be covered seating for 700 in two adjacent stands alongside the home straight. In June 2000 it was announced that a ?2.2 million Sport England Lottery Fund application for an indoor centre with a 6 lane 60m straight, facilities for throws and jumps, full changing facilities and a 200 seater stand has been successful. The official turf cutting ceremony was held on 24th October 2001 and the indoor track was first open to Chelmsford AC members on 16th July 2002. The track is run by Chelmsford Borough Council.
