Additional Information

The track was originally 440y cinder. It was built on clay and the Alderbrook stream had to be diverted from running diagonally across the track area. There is a plaque at the track unveiled by the then Mayor of Solihull Alderman E.N. Hiley on 13th July 1959 to the mark the start of construction of it, the pavilion and the Youth Centre (both now part of the Sports Centre). The track was opened in July 1961 by Mr Keith Thompson MP, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Education. A 189 foot 3M 'Tartan' synthetic LJ run-up was constructed here as a test in 1966 and opened by Lyn Davies with the first recorded use in competition on 16th Sep 1967 and was the first use of this surface in competition at a UK track. The track used to be referred to as being in Tudor Grange Park. It was upgraded to a full synthetic track in 1985. The roof on the Norman Green Stand was opened on 15th Nov 1992. Councillor Norman Green was Solihull's Deputy Mayor in the late 1970s and in charge of the Appeal fund for the synthetic track.
