Additional Information

It was announced on 7th September 2001 that a ?2.5 million Sport England Lottery award had been made for the development of a high performance indoor athletics training facility at Birmingham Alexander Stadium. The facility was first used for a meeting on the weekend on 18th Jan 2003 and is the indoor athletics centre for the West Midlands of the English Institute of Sport. It includes a 132 metre sprint straight, two long jump pits and runways, one pole vault runway, practise area for throws, high jump and weights room. Birmingham City Council also funded the project, in partnership with UK Athletics, and the total facility cost is believed to have been ?3.2 million. It is sited between the Knowles Stand and the former astroturf pitch and thus covers the old throws area which will be moved elsewhere rather than lost. The track surface is Conipur ISP Sprint. There has also been talk that the facility may be extended at a later time to house the demountable indoor track that is used at the National Indoor Arena.
