The track was open by 1987. In its early days there were reports that is was only approximately 400m in length but as it has staged the Yorkshire Champs then it is thought that it is now the correct length. There are changing rooms and a bar on site as these are shared with a football complex. The track had been closed for a few years but reopened in October 2013. The track was called Woodbourn Athletics Centre but since the reopening has now changed to Sheffield Hallam University City Athletics Stadium
