National Indoor Athletics Centre
The Rt Hon Richard CABORN MP, Minister for Sport, turned the first sod in the construction of the track on 15th February 2002 and it opened in 2003. It has a seating capacity of 1500-2000 and is billed as the National Indoor Athletics Centre where national means England. It is also the indoor athletics centre for the Sheffield region of the English Institute of Sport and the whole facility, which caters for many other sports, is commonly referred to as EIS Sheffield. Phoenix Sports Ltd. were responsible for the project as they are the development company for the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. There is already an indoor straight under the main stand of the Don Valley Stadium.
