William Brookes School Track
The track is permanent and is put down on a compacted rubble surface. There is a 100m straight which runs diagonally across the middle of the main 200m track and also has 8 lanes. All the throwing and jumping areas are outside the boundary of the track. The HJ area is synthetic. The first track event held was in about 1893 and was a school sports day set up by Dr William Penny Brookes who was headmaster at the time. This event was witnessed by Baron Pierre de Coupertin and the competition inspired helped him to the idea of a worldwide athletics competition and so hence the first Olympic Games of 1896. The school continues to have quite strong links with the IOC. The track is associated with Much Wenlock Sports Centre which operates from the school. The Wenlock Olympian Annual Games is held here every year with athletics events on the track. Details can be found on the on the Wenlock Olympian Society website.
