Henderson Secondary Modern School (formerly) Track
The track has existed since at least 1955 when was part of North Earlham Playing Fields, Bowthorpe Road. The track is mentioned in the AW 1962 of cinder tracks and was associated with Henderson Secondary Modern School. This became Gurney Secondary School and finally Bowthorpe Comprehensive School but the school closed in the early 1990s and most of the buildings demolished although Ranworth First School, Irstead Road, NORWICH, NR5 8DZ is still on the site as is the Gurney Centre which is a community centre and there are plans to develop this into a leisure centre. The track itself is in poor condition and there are small mounds on the first bend. The field event facilities are all overgrown but the infield is a well maintained grass football pitch. On an older OS map, the track appears to be about 300m but the current one shows it to be 400m or 440y which is certainly the current length. The track was thought to have been used for training until at least the mid 1980s. A possible locality for the track is New Costessey but the school is in the ward of Henderson so (H) seems a good abbreviation.
