Work started on building this indoor straight alongside the outdoor track in 2002 and it was officially opened by Dave Moorcroft and Seb Coe on 8th June 2003. It was funded by a ?5M Lottery Sports Award and is one of the High Performance Athletics Centres (HiPAC) of the English Institute of Sport. This is not the first indoor track at the university as a now demolished concrete one was used from 1963.
