Drayton Green Track
The track was built in 1928 and was used for meetings until about 1990. I remember doing my Cub Scout's Athletes badge here in the 1970s! Originally it was laid out as a 5 laps to the mile track when the distance of a lap was measured 12 inches from the curb. However when this distance was subsequently changed to 9 inches it meant the track was slightly 'long'. To counter this, mile races used to start about 1.5 yards past the start line. The track has an extended home straight and has 4 narrow lanes (about 3.5 proper lanes width). It was notorious for having a tree which is no longer there protruding onto the outside lane of the track as you came into the finishing straight (i.e. the end nearest the railway bridge and Drayton Bridge Road). There is a slight dip in the track in about this place and it is a bit overgrown. There was no steeplechase water jump at the track. At present, the track is in fair condition considering it is used as a public thoroughfare and people walk their dogs over it. About half of the inside and the outer lane is overgrown which means that the curbs, which are largely still intact, are partially obscured.
