Kingsmeadow Athletics Centre
The track was originally a 7 lane 440y cinder one and built by Maxwell M. Hart (London) Ltd. It was surfaced with the then new Hartco Surfacing Material which had a characteristic reddish colouring and was thus a redgra-type surface. The official opening meeting of the track and the pavilion which no longer exists and was situated near the entrance to the ground on Kingston Road was on 16th September 1961 when a plaque which is now in the announcer's hut was unveiled by Herb Elliott. In those days the venue was called the Norbiton Sports Ground. A new cinder track at Kingston was mentioned in the Times of 1st February 1961 so the track may have been available earlier in the year. It is not certain what, if anything, existed here prior to 1961. The track was first upgraded to 6 lane synthetic with a 8 lane straight in 1986 and had a Toptrack surface. In 1990 it was upgraded to 8 lanes all round when the start was moved from what is now the 200m point. The Centre building was opened on 12th April 1990 and includes a sauna, a large refreshment area and a well equipped gym for which there is a separate charge. The covered stand, called the Stan Belton Athletics Stand after a well-respected local, was opened on the same day. There are some signs on equipment at the track which mention the name Kingsmeadow Athletics Stadium although Athletics Centre seems to be the current official name. Up to the 1980s the track was referred to as the Norbiton Athletic Track and then the Kingston Athletics Centre although it is still often referred to as Norbiton. There used to be a PV box off the end of the home straight by the 100m start and also a LJ board. There are was some sand pits a bit further back from the 100m start which have now been filled in. The track was resurfaced at the end of 2002 and the line marking was completed on 14th March 2003.
