The track opened in 2010 and is a regular 6 lane one as part of a public facility. The site formerly used to be Borough Road College, then West London Institute of Higher Education and then Brunel University who vacated the site in the 2000s . The current track replaced what was previously the second smallest synthetic 400m track in the country with just 3 lanes which itself was upgraded from a 6 lane cinder one in 1990. The remaining lanes of the cinder track were originally still in situ but were subsequently grassed over. The old 3 lane track was egg-shaped and had been always been so because some trees could not be knocked down due to the position of a parish boundary. It was mainly used for teaching and sprint training but rarely for distance work because the shape of track means that one bend was tight. The track was very worn and the surface was breaking up down the home straight but the track was repaired and remarked in June 2000 at a cost of ?10,000. Due to the shape of the track, the start was about 25m back from the end of the home straight but the finish line for sprints is further forward. One remnant of the old track used to be a steeplechase water jump barrier with a real hedge.
