Costello Stadium
The track was originally cinder and opened in 1957. It was called the Butlin Track after Billy Butlin (of holiday camp fame) who gave funds to the National Playing Fields Association and Hull City Council to assist in the construction of the track. The track was upgraded to a 7 lane synthetic in 1977 when the Butlin name was dropped. The grandstand and indoor area were built in 1984 and officially opened by MP Stuart Randell on 8th March 1985. The English School Championships were staged here later in 1985. All field events are catered for and there are extra areas for PV (4), SP (2) and LJ (2). There is a warm-up area under the grandstand which also contains a weight training area, general purpose meeting rooms and a sauna. There is also an indoor straight and a PA system is available. The infield is a football pitch. Hull City Council want all the Hull clubs to amalgamate to form a potential British League team and then the track might be upgraded to 8 lanes all round. As the capacity of the stand is just over 500, the safety regulations introduced as a result of the Hillsborough disaster are applicable and mean that three trained safety officers must be present when the track is in use. This is proving to be difficult to implement at all times and so discussions are ongoing to find the best solution.
