King's Park Athletics Centre
The official stadium opening meeting was on 23rd July 1960 although the track was in use earlier that summer. It was upgraded to synthetic in 1984 and originally had an Avonsport surface. It was resurfaced in 1990. The local council manage the track having taken back the responsibility from Bournemouth AC. A new yellow-coloured roof was put on the grandstand in late 1999 and an announcers box built. The track area around the 1500m start was repaired in spring 2001 due to continued damage by tree roots. The poplar trees outside the back straight were taken down in summer 2002 and will be replaced by silver birch ones in spring 2003. A lottery bid was submitted in summer 2002 to resurface the track, upgrade it to 8 lanes all round, improve the floodlights, move the internal LJ/TJ runways outside the track, move the PV box to the opposite end of the runway and provide an external throwing area with facilities for all throws. As of Feb 2003, the outcome of this bid is not known.
