The track was built in the early 1980s with a red-coloured synthetic surface and had 6 lanes. It was reported to be very bouncy and ideal for distance running. It was resurfaced in the winter of 1999 and is now a blue Mondo Sportflex Super X Classic synthetic surface especially made for wheelchairs with facilities for all standard events and special facilities for disabled athletes. The track was not however available for training until 2000. The 2 SP circles by the 200m start have bars across them for disabled athletes. However as of Jan 2001, the PV box has no rails. Full floodlights have also been installed. The Guttman Sports & Leisure Centre is the home of the British Wheelchair Sports Foundation (BWSF) and the track regularly hosts meetings for disabled athletes. The track is actually owned by NHS Estates and is leased to the BWSF. The Sports Centre closed in October 2000 for refurbishment after which it is believed the track will be open to the general public. Vale of Aylesbury AC have their clubhouse at the track. The future of the track is in some doubt as the new facility has failed to gain a track certification due to some of the field event facilities and the perimeter fencing being considered unsatisfactory.
