Additional Information

In the 1960s a cinder sprint straight was built here. Previously athletics took place in the area where the school art classroom block is and there was a downhill LJ runway. The straight was upgraded to synthetic by at least 1978 partly at the instigation of Bill Sykes who was the host club's president for a long while. It had 6 lanes and was about 125m long and incorporated facilities for HJ, PV, LJ and TJ. The start for 110H was at the same place as the start for the 100m with the finish line 10m past the normal line. A complete oval was not allowed due to complaints from the hockey club who shared the ground that it would restrict them to only one pitch. Unfortunately the under surface was not prepared properly and the track was in a state of total disrepair by the late 1990s. A 400m grass track was marked out on the adjacent field in the summer and there was a permanent S/C water jump on the edge of the field. There was also a SP circle and a cinder JT runway on the field. The latter has now been grassed over. The DT/HT circles were moved from the infield of the grass track to the adjoining field in the 1970s because of complaints from the hockey club. The DT/HT cage is still there but the landing area is downhill. In September 2000, work started on a replacement 6 lane sprint track with a side area containing full jump facilities, a SP circle and a JT runway and the work, which was done by Smith Construction (Heckington) Ltd., was completed in July 2001. The direction of the new straight is in reverse to the old with the separate 110m and 100m starts now near the pavilion. The old sprint straight which was immediately in front of the pavilion was removed and the new track placed to the side of it. This was done to give enough room for the track to be upgraded to a complete oval in due course. In the mean time, a grass track is marked out in the summer to the side of the sprint straight. This was only 320m long in 2001 but in 2002 was extended to a full 4 lane 400m circuit. The host club are part of the Woolmer Hill Sports Association and a new Sports Centre adjacent to the track, called The Edge, opened in September 2000 which is shared with the school.
