The track was opened on 5th July 1963 by H.R.H. The Duke of Edinburgh. The original pavilion was provided with the aid of a grant worth ?4000 from the Butlin Holiday Camper's Fund and hence was known as the Butlin Pavilion. At the time of opening the track was referred to as the Harper Green Running Track. County Schools Champs were held in Farnworth in the 1960s so presume was here. From the map, the track appears to be on the grounds of Harper Green School.
