The track was originally black cinder but in the last years of its life as a cinder track, Durham University AC did not use it as they considered it too dangerous as it was either often badly rutted when dry or flooded. It was thought to have 6 lanes all round but possibly more on the home straight. The track was upgraded to synthetic in 2002 although as of October 2002 only the track had been completed. The UAU Champs were held here in 1966.
