It is thought the present track was originally cinder. The synthetic track was completed in May 1988 and has a Chevron 400 surface. The Athletics News Athletic Directory for 1914 mentions a combined cycle & athletics meeting at an unspecified venue in Carmarthen organised by the Carmarthen Attractions Committee with the cycle events on a cement track but the surface of the running track is not specified so was probably grass. This location was probably Carmarthen Main Park where there is a concrete 405m cycle velodrome, telephone 01267 235199.
